How to use the U-Value & R-Value Builder
Collect the full layer order, thicknesses, thermal conductivities or resistances, repeating-bridge geometry and a traceable source for each value.
The workspace starts blank. Load example temporarily fills the controls with demonstration data; reload or use the tool’s New or reset action, where provided, before entering live information.
- Name the assembly, choose Wall, Roof / ceiling or Floor, and select metric or imperial display units.
- Build each heat-flow path in physical layer order, entering thickness and conductivity or a sourced resistance for every layer.
- For framed or otherwise repeating construction, create parallel paths and set Area % so the fractions describe one complete repeating module.
- Enter only a justified ΔU correction, record the Method / data-source note, and review the exposed U-value, U-factor and R-value trace.

Insulation option comparison
- Set-up
- Duplicate an external-wall build-up and change only the insulation thickness while keeping conductivities, surface resistances and other layers identical.
- Result
- Compare the resulting U-value and total resistance on a like-for-like basis.
- Review
- Confirm that the selected conductivity is appropriate to the product, moisture condition and installation being assumed.
Timber-stud parallel paths
- Set-up
- Create insulated and timber-stud paths, then assign defensible area percentages derived from stud width and spacing.
- Result
- The combined result exposes the effect of repeating timber rather than treating the insulation layer as uninterrupted.
- Review
- Escalate metal rails, fasteners and non-repeating junctions to the calculation method required for the project.
Suggested workflow
Place the tool in a controlled project or practice process rather than treating its output as an isolated verdict.
- Fix the assembly geometry and record all material data sources.
- Compare options with the same boundary conditions and bridge assumptions.
- Transfer the selected build-up to the appropriate verified compliance or technical calculation before issue.
Check before saving or issuing
- Thickness, conductivity and resistance units are consistent with the selected display system.
- Parallel-path area fractions describe the real repeating construction and total 100 percent.
- Any correction is separately identified and supported rather than absorbed into a material value.
Common problems
- U-value is implausibly low: look for conductivity entered as resistance, meters entered as millimeters, or a duplicated layer.
- Parallel result will not resolve: correct missing or overlapping Area % values.
- Two options cannot be compared: align surface resistances, layer scope and correction assumptions first.
